Tyntesfield Estate & Garden

The Tyntesfield Estate is a Victorian Gothic estate in Wraxall, near to Bristol. William Gibbs purchased the property in 1843. In the early 1860's, Gibbs rebuilt the Regency-Gothic house into a Gothic-Revival mansion. The Gothic Revival movement started in Europe in the mid 18th century. This was a movement to bring back the medieval style to Europe, after it was forgotten during the Elizabethan period.

William Gibbs employed architects John Norton and Henry Wodyer. The complete renovation cost over £70'000, not including the chapel built by Arthur William Bloomfield in the 1870's.

In June 2002, the National Trust managed to raise £8.2 million in just 100 days to represent the private sale of this great example of English architecture. The National Trust owns and is still renovating this almost forgotten legend.

The Mansion itself is an elaborate Grade 1 listed building, featuring turrets lining the exterior, and a particularly interesting roof, if you can see up there! The ground floor is open to visitors, provided a guided tour is booked in advance. The upper floors of the house are still being renovated, so access to them is prohibited.
