Syon House & Garden

Syon House is a large, 200 acre estate and mansion, situated in sounthwest London. Originally, the mansion was an Abbey, but after the Reformation, the majority of the monasteries was taken from the church and given to the noblemen. After the Dissolution of the Monateries, Syon Abbey was given to the 1st Duke of Somerset. In the 1550's, he rebuilt the Abbey into an Italian Renaissance style palace. After the 1st Duke of Somerset was executed, the Duke of Northumberland inherited the estate. After his death, the 9th Duke of Northumberland acquired the property and the Percy family has lived there ever since.

In 1761, architect Robert Adam was comissioned to romdoel the mansion. One of the defining features of Adam's design was the huge, raised rotunda, right in the middle of the mansion. Syon House was Adam's first English country house he designed, and made him famous for his neo-classical style of architecture.

Today, Syon House is still home to the Percy family, the Dukes and Duchesses of Northumberland. It is currently open to the general public, and is a very popular tourist attraction for those wishing to escape the fumes of city life.
