Holkham Hall and its Gardens

Holkham Hall, situated in Norfolk, is a Palladian-style Country Home designed by William Kent and Richard Boyle. It was built in the 1700’s, based on the mid 1500’s style of Italian Architecture, started by a man named Palladio. It is still today the ancestral home of the Coke family.

When you see the south façade of Holkham Hall, it strikes you with its Roman and Greek architecture, which is classically associated with the Palladian period. Holkham’s cost of construction is estimated to be around £8 million in today’s money.

The Gardens of Holkham Hall that can be seen today were designed by Samuel Wyatt in the 19th century. The gardens were recently restored by the English Heritage fund, and the glasshouses are still been restored as these were in major disrepair. The gardens are classically Victorian in style and design. The Old Kitchen Garden, which the original garden grew out of, is now a plant nursery. In 1730, William Kent built the arch and obelisk, which still today dominate the landscape. In 1762, Capability Brown was employed to make a few changes to the lake and gardens surrounding the lake.
