Hatfield House & Garden

Hatfield House was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. On this site stood the Royal Palace of Hatfoeld, but this was demolished for Hatfield House to be built. The State Rooms at Hatfield House are more like antique storage rooms, as they hold many antiquities such as armour, priceless paintings and furniture. The house is mainly Jacobean in style, especially the esquisite Grand Staircase, which is carved entirely out of wood, and the stained glass windows.

From the early 17th century, Robert Cecil comissioned John Tradescant to design a European-influenced garden. Tradescant imported many dufferent species of trees, shrubs and flowers, which made this garden one of a kind in England, as these plants were never grown in the British Isles ever before. If you visit the gardens, you will see the ornate orchards which were planted, as well as water terraces, fountains, parterres, and a very elaborate maze. The maze is a must for any familes going to Hatfield House.

Hatfield House is open to the general public. Pieces of interest include a picnic site, trails around the grounds and a restaurant and tea room. The house can be visited when booked with a tour guide.
