Easton Neston and its GardensEaston Neston is a country house in Towcester, Northamptonshire. It’s a classical manor designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor. Hawksmoor has also worked on other major projects such as Bleinham Palace. Lord Leominster employed Hawksmoor to design and build Easton Neston as his major residence. The mansion has influence mainly from Italy, and more notably, Michelangelo. The mansion contains three floors, with supporting Corinthian pillars and slim, sash windows. One of the most eye-catching features is the large Venetian window above the main entrance. The main entrance has two Corinthian pillars on either side which support the emblems of the Fermor family, who still live in Easton Neston to this day. When the mansion was designed, Hawksmoor designed the garden at the same time. A canal was built in the garden to draw attention to the main entrance and pillars. In the 1900’s, a water terrace was built, as well as another large pool/lake, flowerbeds (especially roses), and hedges. Unfortunately, you can’t visit Easton Neston, as it remains the family home of the Hesketh family, descendants of the Fermors. If you care to visit the house even just to glance at it, you may see a “for sale” sign up, as the grounds and mansion are up for sale. Back to Articles and Information
