Chatsworth House Garden The Chatsworth House garden, situated in Derbyshire, just north of Matlock, attracts a third of a million visitors every year. The garden covers approximately 105 acres, comprising of formal, historical features and contemporary views on gardening. The first gardens at Chatsworth were the Elizabethan gardens, planted in 1555 by Sir William Cavendish. The Elizabethan gardens were much smaller when compared to the gigantic 105 acres of garden today. You can still see a stone tower, which is rumoured to have held Mary, Queen of Scots when she was a prisoner at Chatsworth House. From 1684, the House was rebuilt, and a brand new baroque garden was incorporated into the old Elizabethan garden. It was at this time many of the fountains, lakes and ponds that can be seen today were built. In 1755, the 4th Duke of Chatsworth commissioned Capability Brown to recreate the landscape. Many species of trees and plants were imported from Philadelphia. After the work done, the garden was integrated into the National Park that surrounded the House. In 1826, the 6th Duke of Chatsworth employed Joseph Paxton. Because of the employment of this 23 year old, the garden became one of the most innovative gardens in Europe. When visiting Chatsworth, the Paxton garden’s influences dominate everything else. It was during this era that the glasshouse was built, and was one of the first greenhouses in the world. This was demolished in 1920. Today, the Chatsworth House gardens remain one of the most magnificent gardens in Britain, and well worth a visit. Back to Articles and Information
