Cacti

Cacti are very popular as houseplants, mainly because of their hardiness. The cactus originates from a desert where water is rare, so forgetting to water it every so often won’t kill it! A cactus is the name of the Genus of which all Cactus plants are found in. Also, they won’t grow much, so when you want something relatively small, a cactus is ideal.

When buying a cactus, it should be firm, but not hard, so you can feel some water inside it. If possible, break the skin of the cactus with a fingernail. If some sap comes out, it’s a good cactus and can retain water well.

When you water a cactus, only water it when the soil is bone dry. Remember that cacti are meant for a desert, so if it’s neglected for a few months, it will simply become dormant until you water it again.

Cacti must be grown where there is plenty of light. For this, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal, although as I’ve mentioned before, they are extremely hardy plants, and henceforth, can survive in most conditions.

The one condition cacti are “fussy” about is warmth. They must be kept warm for the majority of the time, and never kept outside in the harsh British winters. Frost will completely destroy them.

They also like a porous soil, as their roots will rot if they become soggy. A sandy, light soil is ideal for this; although you can buy cactus-specific soil from some specialist gardening shops.
