Buying a GreenhouseGreenhouses are one of the most popular garden buildings in Britain. One of the first greenhouses (or glasshouses as they were known) was at Chatsworth House. With the abysmal British weather, a greenhouse gives you the opportunity to grow tropical plants throughout winter. With the right heating, watering and lighting equipment, a greenhouse could be a haven for all plants that are acclimatised to the heat of some parts of the world. The first point to consider is what size do you want your greenhouse to be? If it’s for just keeping one or two plants in over the winter, a smaller greenhouse is probably perfect. Bear in mind though that a lot of people buy a small greenhouse and then end up converting it to a larger house. It’s much better, and cheaper, to go for the larger house first, and then downsize if needs be. Secondly, what will be kept in your greenhouse? If its just English plants been kept away from the frost, you won’t need a top of the range, all the bells and whistles greenhouse. A simple, metal framed house will be ample for keeping your plants warm. However, if you are thinking of keeping tropical plants such as a banana tree or grape vine (ok not tropical, but still needs a warm climate), a higher quality, polycarbonate glassed, sealing greenhouse will serve a better purpose for the needs. Thirdly, and finally, you need to enquire with your local council in regards to planning permission. If planning permission is only needed for larger greenhouses then maybe opting for a smaller greenhouse will save a lot of time, and more importantly, money. Back to Articles and Information
